Tribute to Mum

Granny Dorothy’s Mum, Sadie McConkey, died peacefully on Thursday 25th May aged 97 years. This is an extract from the tribute read at her funeral on behalf of her three daughters – Joan, Helen and Dorothy.
How would we, as her daughters, sum up our Mum?
• She was an unqualified psychologist who knew how to get us to do things we did not want to do without confrontation;
• She was a woman with a wonderful sense of humour and, even though we don’t remember her ever telling a joke, her humorous comments were much richer and funnier;
• She was an uneducated career woman who, despite having no chance to have a career of her own, made us her career. We are forever grateful for that;
• She was an untrained but expert teacher, who taught by influence rather than by lecturing;
• Most of all, she was a contented, wise and godly woman of simple faith in her Lord, who lived out what she professed to believe quietly but consistently.

She had, in fact, many of the qualities of the amazing woman mentioned in Proverbs 31:
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed.

That is exactly what we are doing today. We thank God for this wonderful woman and for her legacy of wisdom, love and contentedness. We are indeed privileged to call her Our Mum.
